POSITION SUMMARY This position could be for an Underwriter, a Senior Underwriter, or an Associate Underwriter, depending upon the experience the candidate brings. An Underwriter is an intellectually curious and proactive professional who, under minimal supervision, uses independent judgment with adherence to authority guidelines and consultation with management and other departments as appropriate, to handle coverage inquiries of new and existing business; determine and/or recommend risk acceptance; and develop pricing, after review and analysis. An Underwriter services an assigned book of business with a focus on large complex accounts, with an emphasis on retention, maintaining policyholder relationships and customer service. In addition, an Underwriter proactively supports the acquisition of new business through well-developed relationships with brokers and other intermediaries.
LOCATION This position can be remote, hybrid, or in-office at one of our MIEC offices located in California or Idaho. Applicants in the Pacific and Mountain time zones will be considered.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Responds to policyholder inquiries, providing exceptional quality customer service.
- Performs effective risk analysis and approves acceptance or declination of new business, renewals and coverage changes.
- Ensures compliance with Underwriting Department guidelines and manuals, as well as federal and state insurance laws and regulations.
- Educates policyholders of terms and conditions of coverage and offers appropriate objective guidance to aid coverage decisions.
- Effectively prepares, presents, and documents recommendations to be presented to colleagues, policyholders and potential policyholders.
- Studies trends and current developments within the medical communities in the states in which MIEC operates, and nationally.
- Performs underwriting reviews, conducting research to obtain relevant underwriting information and maintaining confidentiality.
- Attends meetings with policyholders and other stakeholders, and attends industry conferences, as required.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS Education: - Bachelor's degree preferred.
Licenses/Certification: - Maintain Agent/Broker's license (from state of Residence); if not currently licensed, must obtain license within ninety (90) days of hire. Must also obtain non-resident license in CA.
- Insurance industry designation(s) (CPCU, RPLU, ARM, CPHRM, AINS, etc.) preferred.
- A valid driver's license.
Experience: Amount of experience required depends on the requirements for the position being interviewed for (Associate through Senior).
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES - Demonstrated sound independent judgment and strong analytic ability in risk selection and pricing development and recommendations.
- Familiarity with medical malpractice industry topics, changes and best practices.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with public and other professionals, and teamwork with colleagues.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, as well as other business-related software.
- Willingness to engage in identifying and/or proposing best practices, or process improvements.
- Comfort with a structured, process-based approach to underwriting, including limitations in levels of authority.
- Strong time management, prioritization and planning skills, thoroughness and attention to detail.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and customer service skills.
- Ability to travel with overnight stays, as needed.

COMPENSATION Salary based on experience and location.
Hiring ranges for San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii:
- Associate Underwriter is: $58,094 - $77,458
- Salary range for Underwriter is: $69,159 - $92,212
- Salary range for Senior Underwriter is: $91,460 - $121,947
Hiring ranges for all other locations:
- Associate Underwriter is: $50,211 - $66,948
- Salary range for Underwriter is: $59,775 - $79,700
- Salary range for Senior Underwriter is: $79,050 - $105,400
