Job Description

Who We Are:

Communal is a creative-minded cafe & shop with multiple locations based in Southern California. With an emphasis on caring for the local community, Communal offers a full craft coffee and drink menu, seasonal food offerings, creatively-designed spaces, fresh flowers, and curated goods.

We strive for excellence in everything we do. It’s a privilege to serve a well-made cup of coffee, curate a collection of goods, or create a bouquet that will brighten someone’s day. We are creative-minded people who seek what’s current and innovative. We believe this creative lens forms an inspiring space that ultimately empowers our customers to pursue their own creative ideas.

We want every interaction with our customers to be kind, genuine, and inclusive. Creating experiences of connection is at the core of what we do. We practice hospitality to make people feel welcome. Together, we form a community that cares.

The Opportunity:

We are hiring part-time to full-time Shift Leads at our south county locations. Our North Park and Oceanside locations are our flagship locations. We offer a full espresso bar, kitchen, wine & beer menu, and retail/floral offerings. It is a hybrid of counter/table service. This position would include cashiering, barista, and server duties.

Our South Park location is a vintage Shasta trailer that has been converted into a full-service coffee bar. It functions as a mobile unit, although it stays in one place. There is outside seating only. Must have a valid driver’s license to work at this location.

We’re looking for someone who loves craft coffee, thrives in a collaborative team environment, and works to ensure every customer feels welcomed. If you love craft coffee, have a strong work ethic & want to join a team for the long haul, we’d love to have you join our team! (Sorry, we don’t have any seasonal opportunities at this time.)

Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver the best experience to every customer, with a friendly and community-oriented attitude.
  • Prepare and serve beverages and food items consistently.
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, stock work, and special tasks.
  • Maintain a clean and inviting environment for customers and team members.
  • Be able and willing to work early morning, afternoon, and weekend shifts.
  • Support your team in keeping the cafe clean and running smoothly.
  • Communicate all staff difficulties, triumphs, and feedback to manager/owner.
  • Adhere to all company policies and protocols, and hold all employees to that standard.
  • Coach/mentor staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Direct floor during lead shifts. Utilize staff in the most effective way to meet shop goals and provide excellent customer service.
  • Model standards of excellence in customer service through direct interaction and handling customer complaints and issues.
  • Maintain coffee and food menu knowledge. Can accurately and confidently communicate product information to staff and customers.
  • Participate in training of new employees.
  • Troubleshoot issues as they arise in the shops.

Why you’re right for this job:

  • You love cultivating community, connection, and conversation.
  • You have the ultimate customer service mindset; you love making someone else’s day better.
  • You are proactive and self-motivated, with high standards for quality.
  • You love coffee and you’re a quick learner.
  • You work well in a fast-paced, highly social environment. You’re willing to adapt, innovate, and work hard.
  • You can remain calm, cool, and collected during peak times and under stress.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience in customer service and/or hospitality.
  • At least one year of lead experience in a food/beverage environment preferred.
  • A strong background and emphasis on customer service.
  • ABC certification through exam if applying for FOH role.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds above your head.
  • Job requires long hours on your feet.
  • Repeated motions with hands and wrists (i.e., tamping, pulling shots, steaming milk).

Position Details:

This is a full-time, hourly position, starting at $17.30, plus share of the tip pool. The pay for this position is dependent on experience. Benefits include sick time and matching retirement. Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) San Diego County.
