Job Description Senior Health Communication Specialist This position requires an active
Public Trust clearance or the ability to obtain a
Public Trust clearance to be considered.
The Senior Health Communication Specialist will independently perform and lead a team of professionals in the development, implementation, and management, and evaluation of major national communication and marketing programs, projects, and strategies for the lay and professional audiences. Direct and guide performance for a variety of Web and Social Media Services, Health Communications, Program Operations, Public Health Analysis, Administrative, Financial, Technical, Medical and Scientific Clearance Assistance within NCIRD.

Senior Health Communication Specialist Responsibilities Include: - Collaborate with NCIRD and other appropriate Chief Information Offices (CIOs) to develop, test, and timely disseminate science- and audience-based products, tools, and messages to different audiences (i.e., public, external organizations, partners, and media) in a variety of formats (i.e., print, video, Web, social media) related to health and risk communication.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and programs to create new messaging and adapt existing messages to be consistent with health and risk communication science, principles, and requirements including plain language, timeliness, and audience appropriateness.
- Provide technical expertise in the creation of integrated plans and strategies for public health communication and marketing programs, campaigns, and activities for reaching specific audiences.
- Utilize health communication strategy and principles to create content i.e. web copy, fact sheets, social media messages, and responses to CDC-INFO
- Assess repurposed material for intended use and ask clearance staff if re-clearance is required.
- Obtain clearance of new and updated products through required channels and incorporate feedback from multiple reviewers.
- Provides technical assistance in health communication theory and science to NCIRD when developing materials.
- Manage social media engagement, including maintenance of current channels (e.g., Twitter and Facebook), establishment of new channels as appropriate, and coordination of social media postings across the agency.
- Apply specialized knowledge to develop a strategy and make appropriate decisions on how to present topic information using social media and interactive technologies.
- Ensure that all social media tools and activities comply with Federal, HHS and CDC rules and standard including Section 508
- Provide advice, and technical assistance in planning and development of priorities, strategies, and practices for health communication.
- Liaise with other internal and external partners and media relations staff on cross-cutting issues.
- Monitor and report to NCIRD COR on the status and progress of work and deliverables, ensuring priorities, methods, deadlines, and quality have been satisfied.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, other NCIRD staff, and media relations staff to draft and clear media responses.
- Write, edit, and collaborate with graphic artists, audio/visual producers, new media designers, and/or web developers to produce and disseminate a range of materials to include rollout plans and communication packages to support major releases, new studies, and other announcements.
- Present health communication briefings or presentations to various groups (i.e., federal, state, and local constituents)
Senior Health Communication Specialist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested: - Master of Science (MS) degree with 10+ years' experience or PhD with 7-10+ years' experience as a web communications specialist, health educator or health communicator (public health setting preferred)
- Strong experience working with digital media channels.
- Knowledge of health and risk communication principles (giving clear and simple communication, including during an emergency, providing actionable information)
- Skilled at multitasking in emergency or time-sensitive situations.
- Expertise in developing, writing, and editing health communication materials.
- Able to provide advice and preparing and presenting controversial reports on the program's status to senior management officials.
- Skilled at applying various laws, regulations, policies, and precedents which affect the use of program and related support resources.
- Knowledgeable in conducting detailed analyses of functions and work processes; and presenting recommendations for improvements and corrective action.
- Must be proficient in current Microsoft Office Suite to include Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint programs.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to present findings and recommendations to leadership, diverse stakeholders internal and external to CDC
- Collaboration and teamwork skills to work and lead effectively with cross-functional teams.
