About the Role Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley, the two-time Peabody Awarding-winning radio program and podcast, is looking for a new producer to help steer our news and current affairs coverage. Fresh Air sets the standard for long form audio interviews and every week, we dive deep and examine the issues of the day. Fresh Air is one of public media's most popular programs, with millions of people tuning in each week on over 650 NPR stations. We are looking for someone to produce our news interviews in this important Election year, and beyond.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Supervise the booking and editing of Fresh Air news interview segments.
- Propose different ideas to Program Hosts for weekly news segment.
- Pre-interview potential guests and take notes. Discuss those conversations and any additional research with Hosts.
- Book selected guest for the weekly news segment, scheduling remote studio time as needed.
- Prepare research for the Hosts to use to build the interview.
- Meet with Hosts to discuss key topic areas of the weekly news segment.
- Obtain audio news clips or other audio clips as needed.
- Edit and help write Host intros and other show copy.
- Log interview as it is being recorded and collaborate with the Associate Producer who will edit the interview.
- Review initial edit, plan subsequent edits (also collaborating with the Executive Producer) to fashion the final edit for broadcast.
- Collaborate with Digital Producer to review the interview build-out before publication on the Fresh Air website.
- Address issues of accuracy, balance, and sensitive language, bringing issues as needed to the attention of the Executive Producer.
- Cultivate and maintain strategic professional contacts.
- Maintain a regular and predictable attendance (in the office at least 3 times a week).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education: A Bachelor's degree in various majors including English, Journalism, or Political Science is required. (Other majors may be acceptable)
Experience: Four years of experience in a broadcast, journalistic or media environment is necessary. Extensive knowledge, interest in, and understanding of American politics, and national/international issues. Interest in current books, films, TV, music, and other performing and visual arts is a plus. Having many professional contacts in the industry is necessary.
Technical Skills: Advanced tape editing and postproduction skills are required.
