Job Description:

POSITION: Probation Officer

DEPARTMENT: Probation

WORK SCHEDULE: Varies - 37.5 Hours per week

STATUS: Full-time

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

DUTIES :

Conducts pre-sentence/preliminary investigations and writes comprehensive reports for court as required, including researching criminal histories through manual records and on computer, and through contact with other probation departments/schools/service agencies, conducting interviews, advising victims of their rights, and obtaining victim impact statements.

Prepares and files various documents for court and testifies/makes recommendations in court proceedings, including recommending appropriate sentencing, and notifying court of probation violations. Assists court in making pre-trial/pre-adjudication release decisions.

Supervises, assists and monitors assigned probationers, including preparing risk assessments, reviewing, executing and ensuring compliance with statements of probation conditions, scheduling office appointments, visiting probationers' homes/schools/service providers, and assisting in obtaining related community services as needed, such as alcohol/drug abuse treatment, and anger control counseling. Administers substance abuse evaluations and drug screens.

Maintains current, accurate case files, including classifying offenders according to risk, recording probationer's character, attitude, behavior and compliance with probation conditions, entering information on computer, and preparing or assigning various documents to support personnel. Prepares monthly statistical reports as required.

Monitors payment of probationer fees and fines, and periodically collects fees and forwards to support personnel for posting/processing.

Assists court in transferring/accepting supervision of probationers to/from other jurisdictions, and cooperates with other county/state/federal probation departments and other agencies regarding investigations.

Maintains current knowledge of applicable local, state and federal rules/regulations, new developments, technology and trends in the field of probation by reading professional publications and periodically attending seminars/conferences.

Serves on 24-hour call for emergencies on rotation schedule.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or related area, and Indiana certification as probation officer. Ability to successfully complete annual continuing education requirements and certification for IRAS, IYAS, and/or CSAMS.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of local, state and federal regulations, and standard policies, procedures and legal terminology of criminal/juvenile justice system.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of current developments, theories and trends in behavior and supervision of probationers.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, judges, other probation departments, law enforcement departments, service providers, victims, and probationers and their families, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to maintain current, accurate, organized files, and prepare documents and detailed reports as required.

Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including telephone, copier, computer, printer, calculator, pager, and fax machine.

Ability to provide testimony in legal proceedings, and plan and make public speaking presentations.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information/records according to state requirements.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, and complete tasks effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including during occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.

Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to occasionally work extended and/or evening hours, and occasionally travel out of town for hearings, conferences and/or training, sometimes overnight.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Incumbent performs a wide variety of duties which are broad in scope and impact, and require consideration of many complex variables and their interrelationships. Guidelines are detailed and well-established, requiring independent judgement in interpreting precedents and adapting methods to individual cases/situations.

III. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent interprets and makes authoritative application of department policies and procedures and standard practices of the profession to a variety of unrelated cases and circumstances. Work is reviewed primarily for compliance with department policies and legal requirements. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision, referring unusual and/or unprecedented situations to supervisor as needed.

IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent communicates frequently with a wide variety of individuals and agencies, including, but not limited to, co-workers, other County departments, judges, attorneys, other probation departments, law enforcement departments, service providers, victims, and probationers and their families, for purposes of exchanging information, explaining/interpreting policies and procedures, conducting investigations, and supervising probationers.

Incumbent reports directly to Probation Officer Supervisor.

V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties in an office environment, involving sitting and walking at will, keyboarding, speaking clearly, close vision, hearing communication, and exposure to potentially violent/hostile individuals. Incumbent also performs duties in a courtroom, at probationers' homes and activity sites, and in a vehicle, and is exposed to normal hazards associated with driving.

Incumbent occasionally works extended and/or evening hours, and occasionally travels out of town for hearings, conferences and/or training, sometimes overnight. Incumbent may serve on 24-hour call for emergencies on rotation schedule.
