Job Summary: We are looking for a talented and passionate Retro Video Game Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing new video games for vintage game consoles, including the Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis. Additionally, the candidate will work on releasing premium editions of classic computer games, ensuring compatibility with modern PCs. Specific projects include "Crystal Mine" for NES and "Legends of Valor" for PC.
Applicant must have made and released a game for either the Nintendo NES or Super Nintendo
Duties and Responsibilities: - Design, develop, and test new video games for vintage consoles such as the Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis.
- Update and adapt classic computer games to ensure they run smoothly on modern operating systems and hardware.
- Collaborate with artists, programmers, and other team members to create engaging and high-quality gaming experiences.
- Develop game concepts, mechanics, and storylines that align with the retro gaming aesthetic and constraints.
- Perform thorough testing and debugging to ensure games are free of technical issues and bugs.
- Manage and optimize game performance within the technical limitations of vintage hardware.
- Work on the physical and digital release of premium editions of old video games, including packaging, documentation, and marketing materials.
- Stay informed about industry trends, retro gaming communities, and advancements in emulation and vintage hardware.
- Provide technical support and updates for released games as needed.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses: - Bachelor's degree in Game Design, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred).
- Certifications in game development or specific retro game development courses are a plus.
Experience: - Minimum of 2 years of experience in video game design and development, preferably with a focus on retro gaming.
- Proven experience developing games for vintage consoles such as NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis.
- Experience with porting and updating classic computer games for modern systems.
Required Skills/Abilities: - Proficiency in programming languages relevant to retro game development (e.g., Assembly, C).
- Strong understanding of the technical limitations and capabilities of vintage gaming hardware.
- Experience with game development tools and environments specific to vintage consoles (e.g., NESdev, SNESdev, Genesis development tools).
- Knowledge of modern programming languages and tools for updating old computer games (e.g., C++, Unity, DOSBox).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Preferred Skills/Abilities: - Familiarity with graphic design software and pixel art creation.
- Knowledge of sound design and music composition for vintage game consoles.
- Experience with emulators and modern tools for retro game development and testing.
- Understanding of game preservation and the retro gaming community.
