General Description of Duties Starting placement will generally not exceed 15% of the advertised initial salary range and is based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES This position is for a Library Services Assistant I primarily reporting to the Lake Jackson branch. The primary purpose of this position is to assist library patrons. This position answers simple informational and technology questions, as well as directional questions pertaining to the location of library materials and facilities at the information desk or circulation desk. This position will also process, route and shelve library materials returned by library patrons. Work also involves following library policies and procedures while providing excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assist library patrons. This position answers simple informational and technology questions, as well as directional questions pertaining to the location of library materials and facilities at the information desk or circulation desk.
Shelve and maintain library materials. Retrieve discharged library materials from designated areas, removing materials from shelves, placing them on book carts, and pushing heavy book carts to the shelves. Sort and shelve library materials in order by call number, on all shelving from floor level to above shoulder level. Shelf-read, straighten, shift and dust library materials as needed. Shift entire sections of shelving as needed, keeping materials in order. Remove damaged library materials from shelves. Remove newspapers and carry to recycling container. Assist in keeping areas tidy; reshelf materials used by patrons and staff from floor, tables, carts, ends of shelves. Record shelving statistics and report monthly; library assistants shelve 2,000 to 6,000 items per month.
Perform additional assignments as necessary. Transporting materials from the book drops to circulation, and stack and sort for discharge. Discharge library materials accurately using the SIRSI library management system. Assisting with Curbside service. Perform additional tasks as needed, such as unloading and loading bags and bins for the courier; searching for holds and lost items, assisting with programs, remove and transport items to recycling container, processing deselected items, preparing promotional items and displays.
OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES None.
All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.
DIFFICULTY This position must be able to manage workload and shelve materials accurately, and work in library stacks without constant supervision. Work involves shelving large quantities of library materials.
RESPONSIBILITY: Supervision Received The employee receives usually detailed or specific instructions. Some assignments may involve general instructions.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT Contacts are with the supervisor, coworkers, other departmental employees, and the general public.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED Personal computer skills, SIRSI library management system
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee works in a standard library environment, primarily in a standing position. No unusual physical effort is required, and the work is not hazardous in nature. Must be able to lift and move library books and materials in excess of 20 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of basic computer skills and the Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge of library policies and procedures. Skilled in handling tasks with attention to detail. Skilled in communicating courteously, efficiently and effectively with diverse library patrons. Skilled in safely lifting materials and pushing and maneuvering heavy book carts and bins.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must possess a high school diploma or an equivalent.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends.
Selection Guidelines: Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check.
FLSA STATUS : Position is Non-exempt. Analysis: This is manual work shelving books.
