Job Description

Summary/objective

Carpenter/Mason performs a variety of tasks involving planning, layout, construction, repair, and assembly of cabinets, tables, desks, bookcases, additions, brick, block, partitions, and wooden structures. They perform these tasks in shop or on-site, indoors and out, using a wide variety of tools and equipment. They may be required to work additional hours or on weekends if necessary to meet service requirements.

  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and verbal instructions to determine measurements and specifications required to construct, assemble, repair, and install wooden/masonry structures
  • Install, replace, or repair glass in windows, doors, and partitions; ceiling and floor tile; hardware such as door closures, locks, hinges, catches, knobs, and pulls; Formica counter or table tops. Cut mortises for locks and hinges and assist in hanging of doors.
  • Estimate amount and select types of lumber, brick, block, and related supplies necessary to complete assigned projects. Account for materials purchased and used.
  • Sand, scrape, patch, or repair minor fixtures, including venetian blinds, shades, drape/curtain rods, window cords, storm windows, and screens.
  • Assist in procuring equipment and materials necessary for maintenance projects and minor construction. Loads, delivers, unloads, and handles materials. Operates shop vehicles necessary to complete these tasks.
  • Assists contractors in locating and gaining access to facilities and structures within them.

Physical demands
  • Requires full range of body motion, including reaching, stooping, kneeling, climbing and walking. Must be able to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires standing for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate motorized equipment requiring manual dexterity. Must have good vision, with or without corrective lenses.

Travel required

  • Travel required is limited to on campus and periodically off campus to obtain materials required to perform your daily duties. Randolph College requires a valid driver's license issued from the state of Virginia to operate a college owned vehicle and as a prerequisite to driving a college owned vehicle the job applicant must pass a driver safety session with the campus security department.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years experience in general and finish carpentry/masonry required, including demonstrated ability to operate hand and power saws, planes, drills, and sanders.
  • Knowledge of materials used in carpentry/masonry work, including lumber, putties, finishes, stains, plasters, cements and related hardware.
Preferred education and experience

  • 5 years' experience in general and finishing carpentry/masonry work.
  • Experience with operating typical construction heavy equipment, Lulls, lifts, tractors etc..
  • Woodworking/cabinet making experience.
