Job Summary The Minnesota Department of Health is looking to add a team-oriented professional to the Children and Youth with Special Health Needs Section (CYSHN). The primary focus of this position will be to collect complete, timely, and accurate data for the Minnesota Birth Defects Information System (BDIS) and other programs, as needed.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Gather, summarize, and validate birth defects and other CYSHN information from available data resources to ensure timely, complete, and accurate data.
- Complete quality control checks of birth defects records in the BDIS database.
- Participate, as assigned, in projects/initiatives related to birth defects.
- Promote the achievement of unit goals and assist the unit supervisor, as needed.
This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Position locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Mankato, Bemidji, or Fergus Falls. Occasional travel is expected. Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications The following information must be clearly demonstrated on the applicant's resume and/or application:
Completion of a medical records program from an accredited institution
AND eligibility for accreditation from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Eligibility for accreditation means completion of required coursework and awaiting certification
OR certification as an Accredited Record Technician (ART) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
Minimum qualifications to be assessed at the time of interview: Knowledge of the operation of a laptop computer, general office practices, and the fundamentals of data entry.
Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge of and experience with medical terminology, human anatomy, human physiology, obstetrics, neonatology, and medical procedures.
- Knowledge and experience with health information, abstraction of data from medical records, applying codes (such as ICD-9 CM and/or ICD-10 CM) using guidelines and standards, legal aspects of health information sharing, and quality control/assurance procedures.
- General knowledge of public health and public health registries and the functions, policies, and procedures of the Minnesota Department of Health.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional health personnel, local officials, community groups, and the general public.
- Ability to use discretion, work independently, and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
Additional Requirements - Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
- This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
